EdgeX speeds time to market for complete edge solutions and/or edge SW/HW offerings by providing replaceable reference services for device-data ingestion, normalization, edge intelligence (AI/ML) and sharing to support new IoT data services and advanced edge computing applications.
Developers, technology providers and end users can realize business-value faster at a lower cost and risk through the skills, resource sharing and economies of scale of the EdgeX ecosystem, either for their own implementations or by offering commercial “EdgeX-ready” offerings to others.
EdgeX is unique in its scope, broad industry support, credibility, investment and vendor-neutral Apache 2.0 open source licensing model under the umbrella of the Linux Foundation’s LF Edge organization. As such, EdgeX is a key enabler of digital transformation and AI across IoT use cases and businesses in all vertical markets.
EdgeX Foundry focus is to exploit the benefits of Edge Compute by leveraging cloud-native principles (e.g. loosely-coupled microservices, platform-independence) and by enabling an architecture that meets specific needs of the IoT edge including different connectivity protocols, security and system management for widely distributed compute nodes, and scaling down to highly-constrained devices.
The project’s sweet spot is in use cases where local decisions are at/or near real time and when automation and actuation is supported by multiple sources of data. Here EdgeX addresses critical interoperability challenges for edge nodes and data normalization where “south meets north, east, and west” in a distributed IoT edge architecture.
As edge computing goes mainstream, it provides a major strategic benefit for a wide range of industries. See how using EdgeX can help users/developers to transform their businesses:
